Life as usual

I feel like life has been pretty normal lately. And by normal I mean that the toilet works, the miracle mold on my ceiling isn't growing right now, and I'm going about my daily routines of language time, time with the Father, time with the neighbors, visiting friends, and time with the team. Oh, and time spent in housekeeping.

Then again maybe it isn't so normal. My language helpers have been unavailable for various reasons, which means I've gone to a bit more work to do the intentional learning time of my language acquisition. We've had very little rain during this part of the rainy season, meaning that collecting water is more of a chore (or we have to buy it, yikes). And the power situation on the island is still pretty frustrating.

Oh, I haven't mentioned the power situation? Well in short we've had very little power since the beginning of February. Before that, we could count on power being on most of the time, with it out a few evenings per week. Then suddenly, we would go without power for 24 hours, or 36, or for some of the team 48 hours with no power. What was going on?

Rumors abounded, but the leading rumor was that the electric company didn't have money to pay for gas for their generators. Now, with the large amounts of money that we pay for electricity, wouldn't the company be able to pay their bills? Evidently someone walked off with a large chunk of money, putting the electric company in a bind. Did I tell you that there's a big problem with corruption here?

So for the last month and a half, we've had power very inconsistently. The fridge doesn't stay very cold. The freezer isn't really frozen. The fans generally don't have power during the night, making it hard to stay cool enough to sleep. And we don't know when it will end. There was a new director appointed at the electric company last week, but he's not a miracle worker-- he can't magically change the situation overnight like we'd wish he could.

Anyway, that's just a little rambling about life here. How about a few pictures too? No theme, just things I've seen. Click on the picture to view it larger.
