Ticketing troubles
Let me ask you a question: how often do you check your email? In technology-saturated America-and-beyond, I'm guessing the answer would be "several times a day." Well, this story features an American (me) and a Tanzanian (undisclosed). One of them certainly does not check their email several times a day. Shall I begin?
It all started with a plane ticket. In order to exit this island of mine I must deal with airports, security, capricious restrictions, unpredictable schedules, and language barriers... but all of that is precipitated by a plane ticket.
Would you buy a plane ticket from a company that only accepts cash and wire transfers?
Well, I did. I made the reservation online, set up the wire transfer with my bank, and waited confidently for the confirmation and official ticket.
It never came.
How long would you wait after sending money before worrying about not receiving a plane ticket?
I was on vacation, so, after calling the company shortly after sending the transfer to alert them to its imminent arrival, I continued with vacation and figured I'd deal with the issue when I was back in work mode. Things here run on "African time", so no one seemed in a rush for things to be sorted out. The transfer had gone through, all I needed was for them to connect their receipt of funds with my having sent the funds and we'd be good! Right?
"Of course right!" (said the Matchmaker--quote the movie/play)
Well, I called again and they said they hadn't received payment. I gave them information, they continued to say "we haven't received payment." They ever-so-graciously held my reservation, even offering to accept payment a second time for the flight I'd already paid for. Gee, thanks.
I called again after failing to get any responses to emails sent to the company email addresses. "Oh, our office email is down," came the reply, "send it to my Yahoo account and I'll look." So I sent information to the reservations manager's personal email. She replied, asking for more information. I called my bank, got more information from them, and sent it on to the reservations manager. I asked for confirmation that the information was sufficient.
No reply.
I sent another email, voicing my frustrations with their apparent unwillingness to work with me. I gave them a deadline for responding to me with progress.
No reply.
The deadline passed and I called again. "Oh, let me check my email," came the response. "When did you send it?"
"Monday."
"Oh yes, Monday. Are you Breno?"
"No, I'm Abby." (I'd already said my names a few times in the conversation...)
"Ah, Abby. I see a couple of emails from you. But where is the information I asked for?"
"In the attachment. See where I said 'attached is the information you requested'?"
"Oh yes, just wait. It's loading."
At this point my Google Voice credit ran out and I had to find another way to call. Finally I call back.
"Yes, I see the bank information. It seems correct. I'll pass this on to our bank and let you know."
Phew! But then I clarified, "How will you let me know?'
"Well, you can call back in a few days and see."
"Ma'am, my bank is changing this weekend, I need to know as soon as possible in case I need to follow up with my bank. Can you call me in the morning?"
"Yes, no problem, what is your phone number?"
(My phone number is on my reservation, but whatevs, I gave it to her again.)
... and thus lies the story. 3.5 weeks after booking the ticket and sending a wire transfer, I have no ticket and can only hope they locate my money.
Will you pray with me that this is resolved? It's been very stressful to deal with (and expensive as far as calling internationally, even with Google Voice), and I don't want to lose the money involved.
Thanks.
